Week 1

I left the hospital equipped with a sling that locked the shoulder in a fixed position. It consisted of straps around my chest held up on my shoulder and fastened at two points on the arm. A quite unstable arrangement for the fracture, but the idea is to let gravity do the work to pull down the lower part of the arm. I was absolutely miserable. I couldn't put any clothes on, but had to leave the hospital in the gown with the open back, this in  freezing conditions.

It was absolutely impossible to lay down. I slept sitting in a reclining chair. I also received 30 Percocet pills. I limited my intake to 1 every six hours. With so much free time on my hands I could read up on wide array of topics, some of which were quite frightening: the use of Percocet as a party drug, its addictive properties, and cases where humerus fractures have serious complications. And this in combination with Christmas time made the entire ordeal incredibly depressing. The first days I was only up on my legs for a few hours a day. Although I was exhausted, sleeping was difficult. I typically spent three hours every night in a state of insomnia, watching movies alone.

I left this post at Week 4, but realized some new person reading this might want to know:
I recommend the Polar Care 300 to any "newbies" reading this. It will keep it cold and little or no pain while you have it on. You can keep it on just about 24/7. My doc said "aw, a baggie with ice will do just fine." WRONG! This is the best invention since sliced bread. No... better!
I was even still using it occasionally, when my arm was "screaming" during week 4 and anticipate using it even beyond. Some nights are just bad. And, other than the "put=chew" sound every 30 seconds, it's sometimes the only thing to calm down the pain.

Thanks for the tip! I just looked it up and if it works, it would certainly be worth the some-$120 pricetag.

Hi,
I'm very happy that you have recovered. The blog is very useful. I broke my Left Humerus ( also transverse mid-shaft).
I'm having problem sleeping in the bed with upper body elevated, the reason is my butt will start killing me of pain . did you have this problem ? how did you sleep ?

in answer to anonymous - 22.12.10

i slept in the recliner for 3+ weeks - i guess until there was some callus formation, and my arm didnt move when i lay down.i didnt try to recline in bed - i imagine the butt would get a bit numb.
i am now exactly 4 weeks since my midshaft transverse fracture, and can feel i am on the mend a bit. many thanks to the athour of this blog - i have read it almost word for word - not looking forward to the rehab part coming up.

Thanks for posting this... I broke my humerus mid-shaft 6 days ago and at least I now know what lies ahead.

Sleeping is the real kicker...

Cheers.

So crazy about your accident. Sorry about that. I love how we get to see your journey though. I really appreciate the insight your giving us. In return I wanted to inform you and your blog readers about making sure you don't use fosamax because it can cause a fosamax femur fracture similar to the one you have from the accident. If you anyone uses fosamax please get in touch with your doctor and legal help.
